Mallow began the second period well as they gained a foothold around midfield and two quick points narrowed the lead to four. While they continued to apply the pressure they struggled to find scores with the Kilshannig defence excellent while they also missed a number of great opportunities. In a close encounter throughout, the sides exchanged the lead on several occasions and the game was right in the balance in both normal time and extra time. Ultimately, a Dermot Twomey goal midway through the second period of extra time proved to be the all important score as Kilshannig held om to claim victory. Blackwater Rovers came storming back into the game though as they began to narrow the deficit with a number of fine points. They soon drew level before Kilshannig moved ahead once more as Kevin O'Flynn and David Cronin put their side two in front. Rovers looked to have snatched victory though when a long range shot found the net but Killian O'Hanlon superbly pointed a long range free to tie the sides, 2-9 to 0-15, and force extra time. Blackwater Rovers surged ahead at the beginning of extra time with their third goal but Kilshannig remained in contention before finding the breakthrough four minutes from the end when Twomey flicked Patrick O'Callaghan's delivery to net and confirm their place in the next round.
