Footballers Book Championship Semi Final Spot   12/07/2016

Kilshannig 1-17 Kilworth 1-05

Kilshannig advanced to the penultimate stage of the North Cork Junior A Football Championship following a deserving quarter final victory over Kilworth at Kildorrery on Friday evening last. Kilshannig ran out convincing 12 point winners but they didn't have it all their own way with little separating the sides for the majority of the contest. Kilworth played with the assistance of a strong breeze in the opening half and while Michael Twomey opened the scoring for Kilshannig, Kilworth got off to a perfect start when Brian Sheehan goaled in the fourth minute. They should have extended their lead but spurned a number of excellent scoring opportunities. Kilshannig struggled against the elements but they did manage to peg their opponents back and points from Killian O'Hanlon and the excellent Cillian Murphy had them ahead after the first quarter, 0-4 to 1-0. The closing stages of the half saw the sides trade scores before a late Kilworth free ensured parity at the half time whistle, 0-5 to 1-2.

The game continued in a similar pattern after the resumption with both teams adding a point each but Kilshannig began to dominate through Murphy and O'Hanlon at midfield with Roddy O'Mahony, Brian Guerin and Damien Murphy also making their presence felt. Jack Kearney, Pa Cronin and Tadhg O'Sullivan all pointed to move Kilshannig into a three point lead entering the final ten minutes, 0-11 to 1-05. Kilshannig suffered a significant blow, however, with the dismissal of Cronin for a second yellow. Kilworth, though, failed to score for the remainder of the game with Kilshannig completely dominating in the closing stages. They added a further 1-6 without reply, substitute Frank McCarthy finding the net, to confirm their place in the semi finals against Ballyclough or Liscarroll.
