Minors Reach County Final   30/09/2015

Kilshannig 2-20 Lisgoold 1-17 (AET)

Kilshannig secured their place in the Rebel Og County Minor B Hurling Championship Final following a thrilling semi final extra time victory over Lisgoold in splendid conditions at Ballinlough on Saturday last. 

While the sides could not be separated in normal time, Kilshannig were the stronger team in the extra 20 minutes as they outscored their opponents 1-7 to 0-4 to progress to the final. A Diarmuid O'Sullivan point deep into injury time tied the sides 1-13 apiece and Kilshannig carried the momentum in the opening period of extra time moving 2-18 to 1-14 ahead. Jack Twomey, Kevin O'Flynn and O'Sullivan struck superb points before O'Flynn buried to the net to give his side a commandable lead. While Lisgoold briefly threatened to reply after the restart Kilshannig had done enough at this stage with late points from O'Flynn and Tony Brennan completing the victory.

The game's conclusion was in stark contrast to normal time with little between this sides throughout. While Lisgoold had the opening goal in the 6th minute, Kilshannig began to gain a foothold through Joseph Cronin, Jack Twomey and Jack Kearney. O'Sullivan's goal followed by points from Kieran and Jack Twomey moved Kilshannig 1-5 to 1-1 in front by the opening quarter. Lisgoold though were lively in attack and managed to narrow the deficit with some excellent scores but Kilshannig held the advantage at the break, leading 1-8 to 1-5 at the interval.

The East Cork outfit however, now playing with the aid of the breeze began to find their rhythm and three unanswered points had the sides level by the 40th minute. Kilshannig were struggling at this stage but Jack Twomey, now at midfield, with two excellent scores ensured a tense finish. The lead changed hands on a couple of occasions in the final quarter before Lisgoold looked like winners thanks to a superb point near the sideline as the game entered injury time. Kilshannig though showed great resilience in the final minutes and it paid off when O'Sullivan provided the equaliser. Kilshannig pushed on from this with an outstanding extra time performance to book a final birth against Kilara Óg or Sam Maguires as they attempt to win back the title that was first won in 2009.
