Kilshannig Advance in Junior Football Championship   27/05/2015

Kilshannig 0-09 Mallow 0-07

Kilshannig got their Junior A Football Championship campaign back on track with a hugely important second round win over Mallow at Mourneabbey on Saturday evening last. Kilshannig suffered a disappointing first round defeat to Buttevant but managed to regroup well and despite a tough challenge from neighbours Mallow, they did just about enough to progress to the quarter finals. It was a close encounter all through as both sides struggled for scores with both defences on top. While each side had an early point there was a lull for a period with the game remaining tied by the first quarter, 0-1 each. Kilshannig however, hit their purple patch in the second quarter with Darragh Mahoney playing an influential role in the middle third, helping his side to dominate possession for large spells. Using the wind to their advantage, Dylan O'Callaghan, Frank McCarthy and Michael Twomey pointed to move them three clear, 0-4 to 0-1. Mallow though responded excellently in the closing stages with Killian O'Connor, Mark Roche and Micheal O'Rourke drawing the sides level once more but a fine individual score from Killian O'Hanlon ensured Kilshannig held a slender lead at the break, 0-5 to 0-4.

The second half continued to be a tight affair with both sides swapping early points before Kilshannig moved into the ascendancy once more, Tadhg O'Sullivan and Alan O'Connell pushing them three in front, 0-8 to 0-5. Mallow refused to wilt though and while they missed a number of excellent opportunities, they narrowed the deficit to one with two points in quick succession. Kilshannig however defended excellently in the closing stages to remain in front while at the other end O'Sullivan got the insurance score with a late free to secure their place in the quarter finals.
