Kilshannig suffered a disappointing defeat in the opening round of the North Cork Junior A Football Championship to Buttevant in Churchtown on Saturday evening last. Buttevant were full value for their victory leading from start to finish as Kilshannig struggled throughout. Buttevant got off to a blistering start with two points from the opening two attacks and soon after they struck for their first goal of the evening, full forward Paul Mannix setting up Denis O'Connell for a well taken goal. Kilshannig briefly recovered with Darragh Mahoneyand Frank McCarthy pointing but shortly before the break, Seamus Madigan struck for Buttevant's second goal. Kilshannig suffered further blows with the loss of Roddy O'Mahony to injury and the sending off of Killian O'Hanlon as Buttevant surged into a 2-5 to 0-5 half time lead.

Buttevant continued to dictate matters after the resumption, using the aid of the extra man well. They pushed further ahead with a number of well taken points and always looked in control entering the closing stages. While Kilshannig tried hard to the end, and despite a Darragh Mahoney goal, it wasn't enough as Buttevant secured a deserved victory. Kilshannig must now face Mallow in the back door route to keep their championship hopes alive.
