Junior Footballers Reach North Cork Final   05/08/2014

Kilshannig 1-17 Fermoy 0-09

Kilshannig reached the North Cork Junior A Football Championship final following a deserving semi final win over Fermoy in Doneraile on Saturday evening last. It is the first time since 2010 that Kilshannig will contest the championship decider and while the game was evenly balanced for long periods, Kilshannig proved too strong for their opponents thanks to a powerful second half display.

It was Kilshannig who made the early running in the opening minutes with the impressive Killian O'Hanlon and Richie Ryan setting the tone for their side. Both players managed to find the target along with Frank McCarthy to surge into a 0-4 to no score lead. Fermoy though brought themselves back into the game and with some fine passages of play they soon drew level with four unanswered points. While both sides spurned a number of goal chances at either end, it was Kilshannig who finished the half superbly. Darren O'Riordan and Ryan pointed once more before O'Hanlon split the posts with an excellent score from distance to open up a three point gap at the break, 0-8 to 0-5.

Kilshannig continued where they left off immediately after the resumption as they extended their lead to six. Darragh Mahoney fed Dylan O'Callaghan who was fouled in the square before goalkeeper Colm O'Dea stepped up to fire the resultant penalty to the roof of the net. Fermoy however almost made an immediate comeback but once again O'Dea was on hand for his side, this time making an outstanding save to deny Fermoy a goal. Fermoy continued to threaten but they suffered a further setback entering the last quarter when they were reduced to 14 men with centre back Darragh O'Carroll receiving a second yellow card. Kilshannig pushed on from this with Killian O'Hanlon the driving force for his side as Darren O'Riordan, Dylan O'Callaghan and Michael Twomey all pointed as they moved 1-12 to 0-07 ahead. Fermoy did have another opportunity to cut the deficit with a penalty ten minutes from time but O'Dea cleared the danger once more with a fine save to his left. Kilshannig were comfortable at this stage with impressive substitute Tony Kelly adding three late points before O'Hanlon sealed victory with another fine point to set up a final meeting with Ballyclough or Kilworth.
