Kilshannig Progress In Hurling Championship   10/06/2014

Kilshannig 2-18 Doneraile 3-10

Kilshannig progressed to the knock out stages of the North Cork Junior A Hurling Championship following their thrilling first round victory over Doneraile in Glanworth on Saturday evening last. In a high scoring contest, Kilshannig were worthy winners as they controlled proceedings for long stretches throughout. However, despite leading by seven entering the final quarter, Kilshannig were forced to hold off a late comeback as two quick Doneraile goals drew the sides level with five minutes remaining. Kilshannig though showed great resilience as they responded superbly with the last five points of the game to secure victory. It was the fancied Doneraile side who started well with an impressive attack that helped them into a two point lead on three separate occasions. However, Kilshannig began to gain a foothold in defence through Darragh Mahoney, Mark Sheehan and Patrick Cronin. More impressively though was the direct running of the Kilshannig forwards who caused endless problems to the Doneraile defence at every opportunity with Dermot Twomey, Killian O'Hanlon and Frank McCarthy in excellent form. O'Hanlon cut through the middle midway through the half to fire to the roof of to the net to put Kilshannig into the lead for the first time, 1-3 to 0-5. Kilshannig should have added a couple of more goals but had to settle for points from Twomey, O'Hanlon and Trevor O'Regan. Doneraile managed their first goal shortly before half time but Kilshannig remained on top at the break, 1-10 to 1-7. Kilshannig continued to dictate affairs after the restart and extended their lead when adding a second goal as Trevor O'Regan shot low to the net after Dermot Twomey's initial effort had been saved. O'Regan once again was excellent from placed balls as he stretched the lead to seven 2-13 to 1-09. Doneraile weren't finished yet though as they began to gain momentum and two goals in five minutes left the minimum between the sides. Soon after, they pointed the equaliser and it was Doneraile who looked like pushing on for victory. Kilshannig had other ideas though as they settled as Dermot Twomey put the Glantane outfit ahead once more. Kilshannig controlled the final minutes with further points from a Killian O'Hanlon penalty and Dylan O'Callaghan as they ensured their place in the next round.
