Kilshannig and Sam Maguires will have to meet again as there was no separating the sides in their hugely entertaining County U16 A Hurling Championship Final at Ovens on Friday evening last. For long spells it looked like the Dunmanway outfit would take the honours but Kilshannig showed tremendous spirit, particular in the second half and forced a draw when Eanna O'Hanlon goaled three minutes from time. While Kilshannig got off to a decent start with Conor McMahon, Shane Lyons and David Guiney pointing to help them into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes, it was Sam Maguires who led at the break,1-3 to 0-4. That goal came at the end of the opening quarter and while both teams missed opportunities, the West Cork side should have been further ahead having struck a number of poor wides. They did extend that advantage after the break to four but Kilshannig eventually got into their rhythm and four unanswered points brought the sides level with less than 20 minutes remaining, 0-8 to 1-5. This was a key stage in the game but Sam Maguires weathered the Kilshannig storm with three points in a row. Then came Kilshannig's first goal of the night, Kieran Twomey's long delivery going all the way to the net to tie the sides once more. However, Sam Maguires responded well to that setback and finished strongly with a couple of fine points to move three in front entering the closing stages. Kilshannig, though, weren't done yet and and three minutes from time, Twomey with a quick free set up Eanna O'Hanlon who fired low to the net to earn his side a deserved replay.
