Kilshannig Advance In Junior Football Championship   18/05/2016

Kilshannig 1-19 Mallow 1-05

Kilshannig made no mistake at the second time of asking with a comprehensive win over Mallow in their Junior A Football Championship 1st Round Replay at Buttevant on Sunday afternoon. It was a superb team performance in which Kilshannig dominated for the majority of the contest with a total of nine different players on the scoreboard. Mallow got off to a lively start with the first two points but Kilshannig began to takeover and with Tadhg O'Sullivan, Killian O'Hanlon and Brian Guerin on target, Kilshannig led 0-5 to 0-2 after ten minutes. Mallow reduced the gap to one but with Kilshannig controlling affairs around the middle in particular through Damien Murphy, Frank McCarthy and Dylan O'Callaghan they extended their lead in the closing stages of the half. Patrick Cronin and Cillian Murphy opened their accounts before O'Callaghan surged forward from wing back with an excellent individual score to help his side into a 0-9 to 0-4 half time lead. Kilshannig stretched that lead to seven shortly after the break but Mallow were given a lifeline when Donal Relihan was fouled in the square with Craig Lynch dispatching the resulting penalty to the net. Kilshannig though responded in emphatic fashion five minutes later when Diarmuid O'Sullivan set up Patrick Cronin to punch to the Mallow net. It was all Kilshannig in the closing stages with Roddy O'Mahony, Kieran O'Donovan and Liam Casey leading an excellent defensive display and they added a further six points in the final quarter to seal a comfortable victory and book their place in the quarter final stages.

Junior B Football Championship

Ballyclough 2-13 Kilshannig 0-10

Meanwhile, Kilshannig bowed out of the Junior B Football Championship following a 2-13 to 0-10 defeat to a strong Ballyclough side at Doneraile last Friday evening. Kilshannig were competitive for long periods and were well in the contest but ultimately it was Ballyclough's ability to get goals that proved to be the key difference. John Quinn and Damien Murphy had a number of fine points in the opening period but two Ballyclough goals helped them into a 2-5 to 0-5 half time lead. Points from Teddy O'Shea and Paul O'Flynn after the restart pushed them further ahead but Conor Murphy, Alan O'Connell and John Quinn kept Kilshannig in touch. Despite the best efforts of O'Connell, Diarmuid Finnegan and Eoin O'Sullivan, Ballyclough were able to close out the victory in the final stages with a couple of late points to ensure their progress to the semi final stages.
