U21 B Football Championship

Kilshannig 3-19 Kildorrery 0-07

Kilshannig got off to a superb start in the North Cork U21 B Football Championship on Saturday last with a convincing first round win over Kildorrery in Kildorrery. While the opening half was a competitive affair with Kilshannig five points in front at the break, the visitors took over completely in the second period outscoring the home side 1-14 to 0-1. It was a far cry from the early stages which were closely contested, Tadhg O'Sullivan levelling the sides with a point, 0-2 each by the 15th minute. O'Sullivan, however, sent his side in front 17 minutes in with the first goal of the evening and while Kildorrery responded with a couple of long range points, a penalty from the impressive John Quinn opened up some breathing space at half time, 2-5 to 0-6. Kilshannig began the second half strongly with some excellent play and some fine scores with Quinn, Jack Kearney, Diarmuid O'Sullivan and Alan O'Connell all on target to move 14 points ahead entering the final quarter. By the time Kildorrery got their only second half point from a free in the 52nd minute, substitute Tony Brennan had added a third goal as Kilshannig eased to comfortable victory.

Junior Football League

Kilshannig 0-8 Buttevant 1-5

Kilshannig and Buttevant were forced to settle for a share of the points in their opening game of the 2016 Division 1 Football League following an entertaining draw in Buttevant on Sunday morning. Both sides could have taken full points but with both having dominated on separate occasions, a draw was certainly a fair result. Kilshannig began brightly as they defended well with Kieran O'Donovan, Mossy O'Connell and Ian Twomey impressing. Michael Twomey, Tony Kelly and Richie Ryan pointed early on to help Kilshannig into an 0-3 to 0-0 lead. However, they struggled at stages with the transition from defence to attack and should have added a number of further scores. Buttevant finally opened their account with a couple of points in quick succession before Kevin O'Keeffe rattled the net following a fine team move. That goal gave Buttevant a two point lead, which they maintained at the break, 1-3 to 0-4. The home side extended that lead to three shortly after the restart while they passed up a number of further opportunities to increase their advantage. Kilshannig battled hard however and four unanswered points from substitute Tadhg O'Sullivan and Michael Twomey, the final point in injury time, looked to have secured Kilshannig the victory. There was still time for an equaliser for Buttevant though with the final kick of the game to ensure a well deserved draw.

Scorers for Kilshannig: T O'Sullivan 0-3 (0-2 frees), M Twomey, T Kelly 0-2 each, R Ryan 0-1.
